Let's talk Turkey!
Dear Customers,
The recent outbreak of Avian Flu has been well-publicised in the press and poultry farmers across the country and facing extraordinary challenges, particularly in the build-up to Christmas. We have been working very closely with Peach Croft Farm, who supplies us, and we wanted to give you a quick update on how that might impact Christmas at Cobbs this year.
Sourcing our Christmas free-range turkeys starts in around May when Peach Croft sources young poults to rear into adult birds. Much like the rest of us, feed prices have increased by over 30% this year alongside many other input costs that go into rearing the perfect bird for your table.
The latest Avian flu outbreak has added significant pressures to the process, with all birds enjoying free access to lush pastures now having to be housed inside to protect them. To help reduce the consequences on producers of an outbreak on their farm, this year turkeys will be culled 3 weeks earlier than usual and subsequently frozen. This will have no impact at all on the quality of the bird and all turkeys will be fully defrosted prior to collection from Cobbs.
This last set of pressures has resulted in huge additional production costs – from staffing to the hiring of freezers at the farm. This has resulted in some additional charges being now added to the turkey prices we pay but I am pleased to say, we will NOT be passing these on to customers.
The quality of the product we sell remains our key priority and we are confident that our free-range turkeys will be as delicious as always! Due to the pressures mentioned above, supply is limited this year so please don’t leave your ordering to the last minute.
If anyone has any questions on this, please feel free to speak to one of our team on the butchery counter.
Very Best Wishes,
Cobbs Butchery
