So, why do we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday?

This year ‘Pancake Day’ falls on Tuesday 13th February

Shrove Tuesday is traditionally the day before the start of Lent (Ash Wednesday), this meant it was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before the Lenten feast so pancakes were the perfect dish!

Traditionally pancakes are made with ingredients that some people say symbolises the time of year

  • Milk as purity

  • Flour as the staff of life

  • Eggs as the creation

  • Salt as the wholesomeness

Here are some of the fantastic local ingredients you can pick up at Cobbs for your pancakes:

Local free-range eggs

From Beechwood Eggs, a family-run farm in Berkshire.

(Cotswold free-range eggs - Stratford)

Local Organic Flour

Expertly milled organic plain-white flour from Doves Farm, Berkshire

Local Organic Milk

Milk from free-range Guernsey cows on Berkeley Farm, Wiltshire

(Cotteswold Dairy - Stratford)

Recipe Ideas

It is traditional to top our pancakes with lemon and sugar or syrup after flipping them in a frying pan.

As the years have gone by, people have become more and more creative with their pancakes and toppings, with the American pancake ever-growing in popularity. This is a much fluffier, thicker pancake than a traditional English one.

We love the idea of having a twist on the traditional topping, so here are some of our favourite recipes for you to try at home:
