Superior meat from pigs with superior lifestyles!

This month we wanted to highlight the fantastic farm that we source all our free-range pork from.

Plantation Pigs is a family farm, based in Sussex on the South Downs, run by Hugh Norris and his nephew Paddy. Their goal has always been to produce the finest quality meat from pigs that enjoy a natural, free-range life.


About Plantation Pigs:

This family-run business has been rearing free-range pigs since 1987; they were the first UK farm to use a completely free-range system to rear pigs. In the 1980s intensive indoor pig rearing was the norm, but Hugh was determined to put animal welfare first!

Fast forward to today, and they continue to operate a truly free-range system, where their pigs roam freely outside, behaving as pigs should. Their pigs are born outside in insulted huts and live in fields their entire life, wallowing in mud baths, fresh air, and sunshine.


Plantation Pigs breed the classic Hampshire/Duroc crosses – known for their exceptional eating quality. A traditional slow-growing breed, producing succulent and tender-tasting pork!

Although sourcing free-range pork does cost us more, we believe the cost is justified by the ethical farming and eating quality of the meat. It also means that our handmade sausages are all free-range too!


Don’t be confused by outdoor reared and free-range pork!

Outdoor Reared: The majority of pork you will find in supermarkets and other butchery counters is outdoor reared. This is the term given to pigs that enjoy as little as a few weeks after birth to roam freely alongside their mothers. They are then moved into a series of ‘fattening’ barns for the rest of their lives.

Free-range: A traditional free-range farming method allows pigs to behave exactly as nature intended. They are allowed to root and wallow outdoors and given time to mature to full growth, without the need for nasty additives in their feed

Sausage-Making Workshops:

We are hosting sausage-making workshops on Wednesday 8th March. Tickets are £40 pp and the evening starts at 6.30pm. You’ll be able to master the art of sausage making for yourself and take home 2kg of sausages! Please get in touch with our butchers to book:
