Autumn Leaves & Pumpkins Please

As the weather cools and the leaves start to fall, our farm shops are bursting with pumpkins eager to find loving homes!

Autumn at our farm shop brings a bountiful harvest of seasonal produce, featuring a delightful variety of squash and pumpkins. This is a wonderful time for British produce; you'll discover an array of British-sourced ingredients like celeriac, savoy cabbage, cauliflower, carrots, parsnips, and potatoes—perfect for your autumn recipes.

In our cafés, we’re excited to introduce a seasonal menu filled with hearty specials to warm you up. Be sure to book your tables online to avoid disappointment, especially during half term and as we approach the busier December season.

Let’s Talk Pumpkins & Food Waste!

Pumpkins aren’t just for carving; they’re delicious and nutritious too! Did you know that around 13 million pumpkins are carved and wasted every Halloween? That’s a lot of tasty goodness going to waste! Pumpkins are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants—making them an incredibly healthy choice. Beyond soup, check out this inspiring collection of pumpkin recipes from HUBBUB: Eat Your Pumpkin Recipes - Issuu.

Now, we know it might seem ironic since we’re hosting a carving event at our Hungerford farm shop, but we want to share some eco-friendly ideas for disposing of your carved pumpkins too:

Pumpkin Disposal Ideas 🎃

  • Compost It: Chop up your pumpkin and compost it. If you don’t have a compost bin, you can bury the pieces directly in your garden, enriching the soil for other plants (just remember to remove the seeds if you don’t want new pumpkins sprouting!).

  • Grow New Pumpkins: If you’d like to grow your own, rinse any pulp off the seeds and store them in a cool, dry place. Plant the largest seeds in April, and you'll have pumpkins ready by October!

  • Plant Pot: Transform your carved pumpkin into a temporary plant pot! Block any carved openings, fill it with soil, and add your favourite flowers or plants.

  • Food Waste Bin: Dispose of your pumpkin in a food waste bin along with your other organic waste.

  • Bird Feeder: Cut off the top to create a bowl, fill it with bird seed, and hang it in your garden to feed our feathered friends!

  • Pet Treats: Pumpkins are safe for pets! Packed with vitamins and fibre, they make a great digestive treat for dogs and cats.

Let’s celebrate this autumn season together, making the most of our delicious produce while being mindful of waste. Happy harvesting!
